Mind Your Mental exhibition: Artist Statement
Series 1: This series is a deep dive into the realm of mental health, focusing on the various tools we often rely on to initiate our journey towards recovery. Mental health is a multifaceted issue, and many factors, including our own internal barriers, can impede progress. In happy pill popper, I explore not only the external aids like medication but also the internal mechanisms we can harness. Pills are depicted not just as medications but as symbols of the emotions and mental adjustments we consciously strive to cultivate. These pieces highlight the duality of our healing process, emphasizing that both external and internal resources are essential.
In start somewhere, I offer a message of encouragement. This piece is a gentle reminder that progress begins with a single step. It advocates for the power of focusing on one task or one thought at a time, underscoring the importance of small, manageable steps instead of taking many “pills”, in our journey towards better mental health.
Series 2 Rituals: The rituals series explores the myriad practices people adopt to navigate life and maintain their mental health. These rituals vary widely—some people clean, cut their hair, hike, journal, retreat into their minds, exercise, stretch, or engage in meaningful conversations with the trusted or wiser. Each photograph in this series captures a ritual that I have personally integrated into my life.
Having recently moved out on my own and spending a significant amount of time alone, I have had to discover what practices work best for me. This series underscores the importance of consistency and mindfulness in these rituals. It’s about finding balance and recognizing that maintaining a few key practices, whether daily, weekly, or monthly, can significantly contribute to mental stability. By sharing my personal rituals, I hope to inspire viewers to identify and embrace their own, fostering a sense of stability and peace in their lives.
